THE POSITION:

This is the entry level position in the maintenance series. Maintenance Workers perform physical labor in construction, maintenance and landscaping assignments. Work is closely supervised and performed according to established procedures or specific oral or written instruction. Maintenance Workers can be assigned to any one of the field maintenance divisions described below.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

There are currently two (2) Maintenance Worker positions available in the Water Department, with assignments in Reclamation and Mechanical. The ideal candidates will demonstrate job-related knowledge, skills, and abilities applicable to the assigned area, including but not limited to the following:

A. Reclamation
i. Knowledge of general plumbing skills
ii. Knowledge of the maintenance of pumps, motors, air compressors, and hydraulic valves
iii. Knowledge of the excavation of asphalt, concrete, or soil
iv. Knowledge of the inspection, repair and replacement of air relief valves, water valves, and use of wrenches and valve keys
v. Knowledge of gas detectors to test quality of air within confined spaces
vi. Knowledge of general machine and fabrication shop machinery
vii. Knowledge of the maintenance of various irrigation equipment

B. Mechanical
i. Knowledge of Lock Out/Tag Out procedures
ii. Knowledge of general machine and fabrication shop machinery
iii. Knowledge of general plumbing skills
iv. Knowledge of the procedures and processes for making concrete repairs and replacements
v. Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of portable pumps and generators

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties:
The following duties are considered essential for this job classification:

Follow safe work practices and observe safety rules and precautions;
drive light trucks and dump trucks and operate other construction equipment;
use a wide variety of large, small, and hand manual, power, pneumatic, and hydraulic tools;
shovel/dig, load, unload and transport earth, debris, or construction materials;
set up traffic cones and barricades to channel traffic;
read maps, blueprints, diagrams and work orders;
assist the public and warn them of hazards;
clean, lubricate and maintain trucks, equipment and tools used on the job;
maintain daily work logs and inventories;
dispose of litter, broken glass, debris and brush;
repair and/or report vandalism, damage or major maintenance requirements.
Additional Duties:
Clean up of biohazards, e.g., animal carcass removal, human/animal waste clean-up; and
other duties as assigned.
In addition to the essential duties listed above, tasks within assigned departments may include, but are not limited to, the essential duties listed below. In addition to the essential duties, each employee assigned to this classification may perform the additional duties listed below, in the assigned department. Any single position may not be assigned all duties listed for an assigned department, nor do the examples cover all duties which may be assigned:

Santa Rosa Water:

Maintenance Workers assigned to the Water Department perform duties below (non potable) that do not require a California Department of Public Health (CDPH) water distribution certification.
Install, repair and replace underground water and wastewater mains and service laterals;
make excavations in concrete, pavement, and dirt to repair water and sewer lines;
back fill open trenches and tamp holes and repair curbs, streets and sidewalks after work is completed using gas operated or hand tampers;
dig and shore trenches, using shoring jacks, timbers, ladders and plywood;
use gas detector to test quality of air in vaults and confined work spaces;
clean ditches, dig trenches and post holes;
install, clean, test, repair and replace water meters and meter boxes;
maintain pumping stations and perform preventive maintenance on alarm systems, motors, pumps, gauges, air compressors, chlorine chemical feeders, hydraulic valves;
inspect system for leaks, construction flaws or root invasions;
confined space entries into meter vaults, pump sumps, pipelines, and valve vaults;
assist in concrete and asphalt patching repairs or replacements;
perform minor building maintenance, cleaning and custodial duties;
turn, install, check, tighten, repair and replace water valves, using wrenches and valve keys;
operation of heavy equipment, use of variety of hand and power tools and vehicles to perform tasks related to composting and biosolids land application.
Required Qualifications
Knowledge of: Uses and purposes of a wide variety of general construction tools and equipment; basic arithmetic, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; safe work practices, including safety precautions for operating power equipment, working in traffic and under hazardous conditions.

Ability to: Perform heavy manual labor under adverse conditions; learn to use standard manual, power, pneumatic, hydraulic and custodial equipment; perform general building maintenance and repairs requiring the ability to climb ladders and reach for objects; repeatedly dig and lift shovels of earth or debris weighing at least 35 pounds; work with various fluids and chemicals using normal protective wear; set up and remove barricades, traffic cones or similar objects; learn job-related material through oral instruction, observation and reading; understand and carry out oral and written directions in order to accomplish assigned tasks in a timely manner; take basic measurements of boards or spaces; fill out work orders, daily logs of work performed and perform physical inventories; learn to use computer technology as necessary to complete job tasks, e.g., complete online timecard, send/read email, complete online training; maintain good working relationships with co-workers and volunteers; communicate with the public in a tactful and effective manner; work various work schedules including weekend shifts and possibly called out for emergency work at night, on weekends or holidays.

In addition to the abilities listed above, qualifications for Maintenance Worker in specific assignments include the following:

Experience and Education: Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience - Six months of experience in heavy manual work;
Education - Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

Additional Information
Work is generally performed outdoors, in all weather conditions, walking over flat, uneven or rocky surfaces for extended periods of time with exposure to heavy traffic, noise, dust, fumes, vibrations, airborne particles, noxious odors, grease, oil, cleaning chemicals, solvents spills using normal protective equipment. Assignments may include work in cramped areas such as manholes and trenches and sitting for short periods of time.

Incumbents must have the strength, flexibility, and coordination to perform the following repetitive movements: hand-arm, bending, stooping, squatting, climbing, lifting, reaching and shoveling of various contents. Lifting and reaching can be above shoulder level and/or overhead. Repairing small objects requires making skillful, controlled manipulations, precise arm-hand movements, static arm-hand positions and fine, highly controlled manipulations. A computer keyboard is used to enter and retrieve data.

Incumbents must have the hand and foot coordination to operate vehicles and machinery with automatic or manual transmission requiring coordinating the movement of more than one limb simultaneously. Operation of heavy equipment will require making fine, highly controlled muscular movements to adjust the position of a control mechanism.

Incumbents are required to move objects weighing up to 95 pounds for distances of up to 20 feet and objects weighing up to 50 pounds for more than 20 feet.

A Maintenance Worker must have auditory ability to hear alarms and other warning devices and visual acuity to see hazards, read written material and discriminate among and match colors.

Verbal communication is generally conducted face to face, although may also be conducted on the telephone and in a group setting.
