Job Description

Job Title: Shop Manager (Trucking / Fleet Maintenance)
Job Summary
The Shop Manager is responsible for overseeing all maintenance and repair operations for a commercial trucking fleet. This role manages technicians, schedules preventive maintenance, ensures DOT compliance, controls costs, and keeps equipment safe, road-ready, and operating at peak efficiency. The Shop Manager works closely with operations, dispatch, and management to minimize downtime and support business objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Fleet Maintenance & Operations
• Oversee daily maintenance and repair of tractors, trailers, and related equipment
• Schedule and manage preventive maintenance programs
• Diagnose maintenance trends and recommend repairs or replacements
• Ensure minimal equipment downtime through efficient planning
Supervision & Leadership
• Supervise, train, and evaluate mechanics, technicians, and shop staff
• Assign work orders and prioritize repairs based on operational needs
• Enforce productivity, quality standards, and safety procedures
• Conduct toolbox talks and ongoing safety training
Compliance & Safety
• Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and company safety regulations
• Oversee DVIRs, inspections, and audit readiness
• Maintain accurate maintenance records and documentation
• Coordinate with roadside assistance and breakdown services
Inventory & Cost Control
• Manage parts inventory, ordering, and vendor relationships
• Monitor maintenance costs, labor efficiency, and budget performance
• Approve repairs and control outside vendor expenses
Coordination & Communication
• Work closely with dispatch and operations to align maintenance schedules
• Communicate equipment status and repair timelines to management
• Support driver concerns related to equipment safety and performance
Qualifications
• High school diploma or GED required; technical or trade certification preferred
• 5+ years of experience in fleet or heavy-duty truck maintenance
• 2+ years of supervisory or management experience
• Strong knowledge of diesel engines, trailers, refrigeration units (if applicable), and DOT compliance
• Experience with maintenance software and work order systems preferred
• Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills
Physical Requirements
• Ability to work in a shop environment and perform inspections as needed
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
• Comfortable working around heavy equipment and tools
Work Environment
• Trucking terminal or maintenance shop
• Exposure to noise, diesel fumes, and mechanical equipment
