Job Description
Health Aide Job Description: Under the general supervision of the Director of Education and technical direction of the SBCS School Nurse, independently provides a variety of health and health-related services to one or more students in a school or classroom setting, maintains health records, performs specialized health procedures, assists in the delivery of an Individualized Educational Program (IEP), provides instructional support in special education and or general education classrooms as directed, and performs other related duties as assigned.
Reporting: Reports to Director of Education or designee.
Employment Status: Part time, 6 or more hours per day (FLSA status, Non-exempt)
This position is eligible for health, dental, and vision benefits.
Location: Main campus, Santa Barbara Charter School
Salary Schedule: Range 25 on SBCS Classified Salary Scale; starting $20.36 (DOE)
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
• Assists in guiding student(s) or providing an example in the academic, social/emotional or psychomotor areas.
• Supervises playground and physical education activities.
• Assists pupils with personal care and physical problems such as toileting, toileting hygiene, feeding supervision, cleanliness; fulfills requirements of positioning, administering medications, dietary restrictions, and specialized physical health care services as specified by a child’s physician and trained by the School Nurse.
• Explicitly follow current written Individual Health Care Plans.
• Assists in providing programs to motivate students to develop to their fullest potential in social adaptation, pre- vocations, self-help, and daily living skills.
• Assists teacher in the classroom and with outdoor activities.
• May be required to perform specific tasks as related to a child’s Individualized Educational Program (IEP) and Individual Health Care Plan(s).
• Must compile health data as required.
• Maintains necessary logs and records.
• Works confidentially and with discretion.
• Establishes and maintains good working relationships with others.
• Excellent attendance and ability to remain focused on work tasks.
• Participates in workshops and in-services as required, including training related to supporting students with disabilities.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
• Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school.
• Applicable experience working with children.
• Must possess Standard Red Cross First Aid Certificate and CPR Certificate or be able to qualify for same within a set period of time.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience or training in health services or related field.
• One year of paid or two years volunteer experience working with children.
• Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification preferred.
• CNA or LVN preferred.
• Experience working with children with disabilities.
• Demonstrates knowledge of disability-affirming practices.
• Ability to provide respectful, positive, and strengths-based support to students with physical disabilities.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
• Knowledge of general needs and behavior of children, including basic elements of child growth and development.
• Ability to learn health and safety regulations.
• Ability to follow procedures and functions, and understand limitations of assigned duties.
• Ability to maintain records.
• Ability to deal effectively with children in situations requiring poise and patience.
• Ability to learn and master specialized physical health care services.
• Ability to administer first aid, CPR, and assist students with routine health care.
• Ability to work cooperatively with others.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
• Ability to analyze situations accurately and adapt an effective course of action.
• Ability to handle emergency situations.
• Ability to see and hear conditions relating to the safety of self and others.
• Ability to speak in an indoor and outdoor setting well enough to project voice throughout classroom and playground.
• Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move equipment, supplies and children up to 85 pounds.
• Must be physically fit to lead and participate in a variety of vigorous activities.
• Must have adequate body movement and mobility to stoop, stand, sit, bend, reach and climb.
