Overview
Role Under the supervision of the Kitchen Manager, the Shelter Cook prepares, delivers and serves large quantities of food to the Armory Shelter. Responsible for the timely preparation and delivery of lunch and dinner in accordance with standard food safety practices.
Responsibilities
-Preparing meals, including specialized diets, according to menus and dietary guidelines.
-Utilizing bulk-cooking methods in various environments (e.g., cook-chill, cook-freeze).
-Ensuring meals meet specific dietary needs, including health, religious, and ethnic requirements
-Dropping off prepared lunches and dinner
-Serving meals to shelter guests during set dinner times, utilizing safe serving methods (gloves, clean utensils etc) and ensuring that no kitchen supplies are left behind
-Maintaining a clean and organized kitchen, adhering to food safety standards
-Communicate effectively with a diverse population, and represent People First professionally to the community
-Display company values: generosity, respectfulness, encouragement, accountability, and trustworthiness
-Perform math and critical thinking as necessary for kitchen environment
-Function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment
-Clean driving record required; must be 18 years of age
-Must be able to perform duties which require walking, talking, hearing, standing, sitting, and/or bending for long periods of time
-Must be able to perform surface and deep cleaning appropriately using potentially hazardous cleaners including bleach, as needed
Required Skills/Abilities
-ServSafe Food Handler Certification required, or ability to obtain a ServSafe Food Handler Certification within 90 days of employment
-Some knife skills required
-Strong verbal communication skills when working in a fast-paced environment
Education and Experience
-High school diploma or GED required
-One year of kitchen experience required
Physical Requirements
-Must be able to lift, move manipulate and or hold objects up to 45 pounds
-Objects that exceed the 45-pound weight limit require additional assistance when moving, lifting or manipulating
-This is a full-time, hourly, non-exempt, and benefited position, with an expected work week of 35-40 hours.
