Job Description
The Job
Mandarin-speaking Teacher needed to support our preschool daughter in language acquisition, math, science and reading in both languages. Duties include designing and executing play-based and nature-based lessons, administering budget and purchasing supplies, and managing child’s schedule.
You will also be expected to foster relationships with other local families (including Mandarin-speaking families) in the area and facilitate playdates.
When our daughter is unavailable (at preschool or activities), you will support our businesses as an executive assistant.
This position is salaried/exempt but expected to average 40 hours per week.
Experience:
• Experience teaching Kindergarten through Third Grade required (experience in any one grade qualifies).
• Waldorf experience, a plus.
• Experience in play-based and nature-based learning environments required.
• Children of teacher are especially welcome. Particularly aged 3-8.
Qualities:
• High level of critical thinking
• Ability to make learning fun
• Proactive/self-starting
• Minimum guidance will be given. A successful applicant will be able to design and execute their curriculum without support from parents other than financial support. However, you must be open and welcoming, to the extent we are able to be involved.
• Our daughter should be excited to come and hang out with you every day.
Our Daughter:
Our daughter has had nearly two years of Mandarin instruction from her au pair and is able to understand and she responds in simple sentences. Parents do not speak Mandarin, but Mom is trying to learn.
She has travelled with us to Greece, London, Hawaii, New York, Las Vegas, Colorado, San Diego, Los Angeles, and Monterey. We have a three-week trip to China planned for this summer and we have plans to live in Taiwan in her later elementary school years.
We are frequent visitors to the Children’s Museum of Sonoma County, the California Academy of Sciences, Exploratorium, San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park, and Monterey Bay Aquarium.
She loves preschool and will continue to attend Wednesdays through Fridays from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. She also enjoys gymnastics, skiing, art class, soccer, and music class.
Our daughter is particularly verbal. She devours big words and enjoys early chapter books. We love reading to her and watching as her language develops, and we are also hoping to balance her learning with additional math and science.
Her gross motor skills are particularly advanced. We love jumping, climbing, and hiking. We are also trying to be thoughtful about integrating additional opportunities for fine motor skill development that will be engaging to her.
The Setting:
We live on four wooded acres in Sebastopol, twenty minutes from Santa Rosa and an hour and fifteen minutes from San Francisco. Our property features mature redwoods, a creek, fifty fruit trees, a robust garden, and a chicken coop.
Our community has a nationally renowned farmer’s market and our road has farm stands that sell local honey, cheese, produce, and we have a real butcher five minutes from our house.
We do as much as we can with our daughter outside and we have invested in making our property a playground for her.
