Overview
We are seeking a knowledgeable and customer-focused Optician to join our healthcare team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in ophthalmology, optical systems, and patient care, with the ability to assist patients in selecting eyewear and managing their vision needs. This role offers an opportunity to work within a dynamic clinical environment, supporting both retail and medical aspects of eye care. Prior experience with EMR systems, medical records, and laboratory procedures is highly valued. The Optician will play a vital role in ensuring exceptional patient service while maintaining compliance with healthcare regulations such as HIPAA.

Duties

Assist patients in selecting appropriate eyewear based on prescription and lifestyle needs, utilizing retail sales skills and optical experience
Take precise measurements for lenses and frames, ensuring proper fit and comfort
Manage optical inventory, including ordering supplies and maintaining stock levels using retail management and retail math skills
Process insurance claims and perform medical billing using knowledge of medical coding, EMR systems (such as Epic or other EMR platforms), and medical records management
Educate patients on eye health, anatomy, physiology, and the importance of regular eye exams
Conduct basic vision tests including vital signs when necessary, supporting comprehensive eye assessments
Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations and ensure secure handling of medical records
Support laboratory procedures related to lens fabrication and quality control, adhering to aseptic techniques when applicable
Collaborate with ophthalmologists and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care for pediatrics, senior care, or general populations
Skills

Strong knowledge of ophthalmology, anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology relevant to eye care
Experience with optical systems, laboratory procedures, and EMR platforms such as Epic or similar software
Proven ability in retail sales, retail management, and retail math for inventory control and sales transactions
Familiarity with HIPAA compliance, medical billing processes, and medical coding standards
Excellent communication skills to educate patients about their eye health and product options
Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail
Experience working with diverse patient populations including pediatrics and senior care is preferred
Knowledge of aseptic techniques for laboratory or clinical procedures is advantageous
