Field Technician - Survey Chainman

Position Overview:

We are seeking a reliable and motivated Survey Chainman to join our survey crew at Nasland Engineering. This is a field-based, entry-level position, providing critical support for our surveying department. The Survey Chainman works under the supervision of a Survey Party Chief, assisting with field measurements, equipment setup, and marking survey points. Out-of-town travel and occasional overnight stays are a regular part of this role.

Key Responsibilities:

- Assist survey crews with boundary, topographic, construction layout, and utility surveys.
- Carry, set up, and operate survey equipment, including rods, prisms, tripods, total stations, GPS units, and markers.
- Measure and record distances, elevations, and angles under the direction of survey staff.
- Maintain and care for survey equipment and tools.
- Record accurate field notes and survey data.
- Follow all safety procedures and guidelines on job sites.
- Travel to various project sites across California; overnight stays may be required.
- Maintain survey vehicles, including keeping them clean and reporting any maintenance or repairs needed.

Qualifications:

- Entry-level candidates welcome; interest in surveying, engineering, or construction preferred.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and on uneven terrain.
- Physical stamina for lifting, carrying, and extended fieldwork.
- Willingness to travel and stay overnight.
- Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

Plus:

- Previous survey or construction field experience.
- Familiarity with survey tools, instruments, or measurement techniques.
- Experience with Trimble.
- Interest in developing skills toward advancement as a Survey Technician.
