Overview
The Legal Document & Discovery Specialist provides comprehensive legal drafting and discovery support within a divorce financial expert firm, with a particular emphasis on financial and retirement-related matters. This role supports analysts, attorneys and clients by drafting a wide range of legal documents, managing discovery workflows, and coordinating with opposing counsel, clients, financial professionals, and plan administrators. The ideal candidate is detail oriented with strong legal writing and case management abilities and can contribute across multiple phases of a case—from discovery through settlment and post-judgment implementation.
Legal Drafting & Case Support
-Draft, review, and revise a wide range of family law documents, including:
--Proposed orders, stipulations, and settlement agreements
--Demands, responses, and correspondence with opposing counsel
--Motions and supporting documentation (where jurisdictionally permitted)
-Review pleadings, judgments, and settlement agreements for accuracy, consistency, and enforceability.
-Assist financial analysts with refining settlement language, particularly in financially complex matters.
Discovery Management
-Manage the discovery process from intake through completion, including:
--Drafting discovery demands, interrogatories, and document requests
--Preparing and organizing discovery responses
--Tracking deadlines, deficiencies, and follow-ups
-Collect, review, and organize financial documents, including retirement account statements, plan summaries, and valuation materials.
-Identify missing, incomplete, or inconsistent discovery and proactively follow up with clients, counsel, or third parties.
-Prepare internal discovery summaries to support attorney review and strategy.
Financial & Retirement Asset Support
-Draft, review, and revise QDROs and other retirement division instruments for various plan types (401(k), pensions, federal/military plans, IRAs, etc.).
-Communicate with plan administrators to confirm plan requirements and approval procedures.
-Review settlement agreements and judgments to ensure retirement provisions are clear, accurate, and administratively feasible.
-Flag potential drafting issues or post-judgment risks related to retirement assets.
Coordination & Communication
-Serve as a primary point of contact for discovery-related communications.
-Coordinate with attorneys, paralegals, financial professionals, and plan administrators to move matters forward efficiently.
-Maintain organized case files, templates, and drafting standards.
-Monitor deadlines and ensure timely filings and support multiple cases simultaneously
Compliance & Professional Standards
-Stay current on family law procedures, discovery rules, and retirement plan requirements.
-Maintain strict confidentiality and professionalism in all communications and documentation.
Required Qualifications
- 3–5 years of experience in a family law or litigation support role.
- Demonstrated experience drafting legal documents such as demands, responses, motions, and proposed orders.
- Hands-on experience managing or supporting discovery workflows.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to review financial documents and identify key issues.
- Exceptional legal writing, proofreading, and document organization skills.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word and professional legal formatting.
- Strong communication skills with attorneys, clients, and third parties.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines and work independently.
Preferred Qualifications
- Paralegal certification or formal legal training.
- Experience with retirement assets or QDRO drafting (preferred but not required).
- Experience working across multiple state jurisdictions.
- Familiarity with family-law financial disclosures and post-judgment enforcement.
- QDRO EXPERIENCE PREFERRED BUT NOT REQUIRED | We will provide comprehensive training and certification support for the right candidate with strong family law litigation experience.
