Job Description

Actively looking for a mechanic to help with tooling for a geotechnical engineering company soil test tooling operations.

Position Overview

The Geotechnical Rig Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and optimizing geotechnical drilling rigs and related support equipment. This role ensures that drilling operations run safely, efficiently, and with minimal downtime. The ideal candidate has strong mechanical experience with hydraulic systems, diesel engines, and drilling equipment.



Key Responsibilities

Rig Maintenance & Repair
• Perform routine maintenance on geotechnical drill rigs (e.g., CME, Diedrich, Mobile B rigs, track rigs, etc.)
• Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and diesel engine issues
• Conduct preventative maintenance programs to reduce downtime
• Maintain service records and maintenance logs

Tooling & Equipment Management
• Maintain, repair, and inventory drilling tooling (augers, drill rods, casing, core barrels, SPT hammers, bits, etc.)
• Fabricate or modify tooling as needed
• Inspect tooling for wear and safety compliance
• Manage spare parts inventory and order replacements as needed

Field Support
• Provide on-site troubleshooting support for drill crews
• Respond to equipment breakdowns in the field
• Coordinate with drillers and geotechnical staff to ensure operational readiness
• Assist with tooling handling during operations

Shop & Safety
• Maintain a clean and organized shop
• Follow OSHA and company safety standards
• Ensure equipment complies with safety regulations
• Conduct safety inspections on rigs and support vehicles



Qualifications

Required
• 2-3 years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic (drilling rigs preferred)
• Strong knowledge of hydraulic systems and diesel engines
• Experience with welding and metal fabrication
• Ability to read mechanical schematics and troubleshoot systems
• Valid driver’s license
• Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work outdoors in varying conditions

Preferred
• Experience with geotechnical or environmental drilling rigs
• CDL (Commercial Driver’s License)
